It is a nickname I use on the Internet. It is inspired by the name Gorgoroth. I felt the need for a goofy nickname.
I think that being 'always connected' is harmful for the psyche, we need time to relax. I relax when I know that I it is impossible to interrupt me.
Usually nothing is so urgent that it really can not wait, be it hours or days. If you feel frustrated because of this, try doing some breathing exercises and meditation, you will soon find that the frustration becomes less. I normally always process your message. If you suspect that I missed it, please wait a couple of days before reminding me.
I sometimes turn my phone, computer and Internet off. Especially on Sunday, that is my official “day of rest”.
There are several reasons. Let's explain them. 1)
I think a lot of social media does not have our best interest in mind. Some social media are even actively harming us, be it feeding our addiction to technology, doing harvest on our personal information, invading our privacy, etc.
There are some benefits to have a presence on social media, but only because we collectively use them, this creates a enormous peer-pressure. Which causes that the oblivious majority inflicts harm on and the more informed minority. (and on themselves, of course)
I try to not add to this peer-pressure.
If am still active on some social media, this is either because I still have a dependency going on, or because I believe this specific social media is not evil. I think most FOSS and open-standard based social media are good.
But, won't you miss out on stuff?
Yes, I probably will.
There is no harm in that.
You will always miss out on something. If you head to one party/event, you will not be able to attend another party/event at the same time. If you party all night, you will miss out on a good nights rest.
The point being, you will always miss out on stuff. So you can better focus on the things that you are not missing out. Not being on social media just means your life will be filled with other events, events that you might have overlooked otherwise.
In general, I try to use only open standards for communication.
Writing things orders my thoughts. Which makes it easier for me to remember WHY I made X choice.
If someone criticizes me because I can't explain a choice properly, then they are absolutely right. Writing this FAQ allows me to explain stuff, both for myself and for the people close to me.
That makes me both more decisive and more transparent.
